A Grandfather's Legacy

Photographer: BRIGITTE O. BINTUDAN

Subject: 'POSEL' (From the word fossil; Remains of pine tree)

Location: PO-NGOL, LIBOONG, TIKEY, BOKOD, BENGUET

Description:

Believed to be more than a century old, these treasures lie as fences at the same time mohon at the Kitan-Esnara ancestral house. The hard working patriarch, Melecio P. Esnara with his bare hands collected it from the mountains during dry seasons and from the riversides after the rains, a hobby which he started somewhere in the late 1950s.

These 'posel' are the core of matured tree branches analogous to the skeleton of animals and human beings. It is hard and strong that it can withstand weathering something anticipated by our wise grandfather despite being unschooled.

There were no trees cut nor harmed in the process but purely through natural phenomena thus an indication that our forefather was a responsible steward of nature.

When the deadly earthquake struck Luzon in 1990, part of the 'posel' collection served as bonfire fuel all night where natives within the locality gathered together around the fire while praying for salvation. This illustrates how loving and caring our late "Tatang" was.

Note: Descendants of Kitan-Esnara family are the rightful owners of these 'posel'. Please do not get without permission.
