The resilience and commitment of Benguet Province in disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) were celebrated as it proudly received the prestigious 2023 Gawad KALASAG (A Seal for Local DRRM Council and Offices) award. Governor Dr. Melchor Daguines Diclas led the province to this achievement, earning the notable "Beyond Compliant" distinction, alongside Mt. Province among Cordillera provinces and 31 others nationwide.
Four Benguet municipalities showcased their dedication by also achieving the "Beyond Compliant" status: Bokod, Buguias, Kibungan, and La Trinidad. Additionally, eight municipalities, namely Bakun, Itogon, Kapangan, Kabayan, Mankayan, Sablan, Tuba, and Tublay, achieved full compliance with DRRM standards.
Governor Diclas expressed his gratitude for the collaborative efforts and sacrifices made by responders and stakeholders at the provincial and municipal disaster risk reduction and management councils. These efforts have contributed significantly to the safety and resilience of Benguet communities facing various calamities. The governor commended the disaster risk reduction and management officers (DRRMOs) for their enormous contributions, emphasizing their crucial role in ensuring the welfare of Benguet residents.
In a social media post, Benguet Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), led by Abner Lawangen, expressed appreciation for being recognized as a "Beyond Compliant" office, highlighting their unwavering commitment to disaster risk reduction and management. The post extended special thanks to Governor Melchor Diclas and dedicated stakeholders for their continuous support.
The KALASAG award, which stands for KAIamidad at Sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan, was initiated in 1998 to recognize excellence in DRM and humanitarian assistance. According to the National Disaster Coordinating Council's memorandum circular No. 01, s. 2008, KALASAG provides a mechanism to obtain sustained commitment and support from the highest level of government by acknowledging the exceptional contributions of various DRM practitioners in rebuilding the resilience of nations and communities to disasters. This award program underscores the importance of fostering quality disaster risk reduction and management initiatives across the nation.
